History of Toonami

Toonami is Cartoon Network's primary Saturday evening action animation block, It is similar to the Adult Swim's Action Cartoons, airing Saturdays at 7-11 p.m. ET/PT. The block, which made its world premiere on Monday, March 17, 1997, initially replaced Power Zone, Cartoon Network's most recent incarnation of the Super Adventure block which had been a staple on the network since October 1, 1992. Toonami was originally a weekday afternoon cartoon block hosted by Space Ghost villain-turned-producer Moltar at the Ghost Planet Industries building from 1997 to July 9, 1999.

On Saturday, July 10, 1999, Cartoon Network relaunched Toonami with a new environment, the Ghost Planet Spaceship Absolution, and a new host named TOM. The night also introduced the Toonami Midnight Run late night block which was originally a five-hour Saturday night block (technically Sunday) at midnight EST until March 2000, when it moved to weeknights in an hour-long format until January 2002.

Naruto on Toonmani

On 10 September 2005, Naruto had its hour-long premiere in the U.S. on Cartoon Network's Toonami. The first and second episodes were shown from 9:00 - 10:00, and an hour-long encore was shown from 10:00 - 11:00PM. Leading up to the series' English-language premiere, many fans expressed fears that it would receive a treatment similar to that of One Piece, which was heavily edited and Americanized for broadcast in North America (bringing it to a child-safe TV-Y7 rating). Surprisingly, though, Naruto was aired at the rating level of TV-PG rather than the TV-Y7 rating, which is somewhat atypical for Toonami, but not unheard-of. Many elements that were expected to be edited out of the broadcast version were left in, such as slight language you wouldn't normally hear on Toonami (the shouting of "You pervert!" and "This sucks!"), references to alcoholism and mild sexual situations and Japanese cultural differences (including food and Japanese-language writing), and even the battles, some which included blood left unedited; many of these elements are not normal for a block aimed at pre-teens.

Toonami Jetstream

Toonami Jetstream is an ad-supported online broadband service provided by Cartoon Network and Viz Media. It hosts various Toonami hits and has music videos, game reviews, and a comment box. It was scheduled to premiere July 17, 2006, but actually began only recently. Toonami Jetstream is only available in the United States. A computer with Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 10, Flash Player 8, and a Windows 2000 Service Pack 4+ or Windows XP operating system is required, as well as a broadband connection. So far, Toonami Jetstream does not support Opera, or non-Windows computers; however, it can support Mozilla Firefox if an ActiveX plugin is installed.
